uscg June 13,2009 The Coast Guard suspended its search for a 35-year-old man reported missing at Far Rockaway Beach in the East Rockaway Inlet, N.Y.

Ramon Figero went swimming offshore with Daria Miranda, 24, when Miranda began having trouble. Figero tried to help her to shore, went under and never resurfaced, according to witnesses.Miranda was recovered by a Good Samaritan and transported to waiting Emergency Medical Service personnel on shore. She is listed in critical condition at a local hospital.

Figero remains missing.

A 21-year-old woman who reported the incident stated that all three involved were co-workers.

Rescue crews from Coast Guard Station Jones Beach, Nassau County Aviation and marine assets, New York Fire Department air units and New York City Police Department divers participated in the search.

“Today there was an exhaustive effort by all agencies involved - we saturated the area with assets and searched for 12 hours,” said Chief Petty Officer Keith Kucera, the executive officer of Coast Guard Station Jones Beach. “It’s always a good idea to check the water temperature and weather reports before going out. Wearing a lifejacket may also improve your chances of being located as they help keep you above water.”

The case has been suspended pending further developments.

fuel spill June 5,2009 NEW YORK-Coast Guard Sector New York personnel are overseeing the cleanup of approximately 200 gallons of number 3-diesel fuel that spilled into the water in Mariners Harbor, N.Y., today. Coast Guard Sector New York received a call from a Cleanwater Facility of New York Inc. representative at about 6:30 stating that the fuel spilled following a transfer onboard the 220-foot tank barge Josiah Bartlett. The facility deployed an absorbent boom as soon as the spill was discovered and Miller's Environmental arrived on scene at 7:45 and deployed a containment boom around the vessel. Coast Guard pollution investigators also arrived on scene to further investigate the spill.
"We commend the responsible party for the quick action in notifying the Coast Guard and taking responsibility for the cleanup," said Lt. Caren Damon, Coast Guard Sector New York command duty officer. "It's possible that there will be some residual sheen for the next couple of days."
